HOW NICK SHALEK WON

A Shalek supporter explains the strategy to the YDN:

“We made a couple of announcements to the entire football team when we had team meetings and said, ‘Listen, one of our buddies is going to be running for a local office, and for those of you who live in the ward … we’re going to have voter registration sign up sheets over by the cleats…After we pushed them a couple of times and got them registered and let them know this was a close friend of ours, they obliged, the younger guys especially.”

  1. Josh – Why do you hate secret ballots? Why do you hate DEMOCRACY!?

Also, when we say “push” in the organizing world, usually we mean it in the metaphorical sense. Do you think the football team has developed similar nuance?

  2. this is the most money quote, by far:

“After we pushed them a couple of times and got them registered and let them know this was a close friend of ours, they obliged, the younger guys especially.”

    No kidding.

    Close second:

“unlike Kruger, Shalek…had a wide-ranging base of friends and associates on campus who might help him win over voters…”

    Ouch.
